Islamabad: The federal government has issued a notification announcing a significant hike in the salaries of the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairman of the Senate, raising their monthly remuneration by over 600 percent.
According to reports, the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs released the notification, which states that both the Speaker and the Chairman will now receive a monthly salary of PKR 1.3 million (13 lakh rupees). This new salary structure will take effect from January 1, 2025.
Previously, the monthly salary for both positions was PKR 205,000.
In January, a committee headed by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq approved an increase of PKR 519,000 in the monthly salaries of all Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and Senators. Prior to this adjustment, legislators were receiving PKR 180,000 per month.
It was reported that the initial proposal had recommended setting the monthly salary for parliamentarians at PKR 1 million. However, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq rejected that suggestion and agreed to a revised increase, capping the new salary at PKR 519,000.
